KiB vs KB, and why 1G is not 1Gi in Kubernetes.

Why this exists

Disks are sold in GB (1000³) but Linux and Kubernetes count in GiB (1024³) — a 7% gap that quietly breaks capacity maths. Convert between them when sizing volumes and memory limits.

The whole confusion in one sentence: vendors count in thousands (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) while operating systems and Kubernetes count in 1024s (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) — same-sounding names, ~7% apart at the gigabyte scale, and growing with every step up.

At this scale the two systems differ by 7.4% — the same gap that makes a “1 TB” drive show up as 931 GiB in the OS, and a 1G container limit 7% smaller than 1Gi.
